According to Dorland's Illustrated Medical Dictionary health is defined as "a state of optimal physical, mental, and social well-being, and not merely the absence of disease and infirmity."

To compare chiropractic with traditional medicine, Chiropractic is based on the scientific evidence that the human body has an innate power to maintain its own health. The art of chiropractic focuses on the correction of spinal malfunctions, called subluxations, in order to remove interference to the spinal cord and the nerves. Science has found that the nervous system controls all organs and tissues of the body, so a nerve system, functioning at its best, facilitates the body's ability to cope with disability and disease. That doesn't just mean lack of illness, but staying well and performing well for a lifetime. Because of its potential to enable patients to live healthier, more fulfilling lives, chiropractic has been named "The Big Idea."
   
Chiropractic care is a natural, preventative and non-invasive form of health care based on the principle that the body has an inherent ability to heal without the use of drugs or surgery.  Misalignments of the spine, or subluxations, often interfere with normal nervous system function, inhibiting the body’s ability to heal itself.  Corrections to the spine through chiropractic adjustments allow the body to heal naturally.

 

In the past symptoms were seen to result from the body malfunctioning and upon seeking medical care, a patient was often medicated with the objective being to eliminate or mask the symptom.  However, a recent editorial in the American Journal of Medicine states that, ‘Physicians have adopted their understanding of symptoms automatically and uncritically as the foundation of diagnosis and medical care.’  In fact conventional medicine by attempting to treat diseases focuses on eliminating symptoms.

 

It turns out that your body has within it an incredible intelligence which has evolved across millions of years.  From moment to moment, it coordinates your bodily systems with the information it is receiving about your external environment.  When you are confronted with what at first appears to be an annoying symptom, you will be best served by considering it your body’s appropriate response to an environmental or lifestyle stress.  Alternatively, it may be a signal telling you what not to do in order to help the body restore, and then optimize, health.
