It's "organic, natural and healthy," but is it GOOD for me????

At Life Empowerment Wellness Center, we constantly teach that healthy food choices are essential. Everyone knows how important it is to fuel their body with vitamins, minerals, trace minerals, proteins, carbohydrates, fats and enzymes. Without these necessary nutrients, bodies can't function properly and health problems will develop. Initial minor symptoms such as allergies, fatigue, headaches, stomach ailments, and skin issues can lead to major health problems including diabetes, heart disease and cancer. 

As such, it is important to eat fresh, unprocessed foods, like organic vegetables and fruit, legumes, and raw nuts and seeds.  These live foods contain vast amounts of vitamins, minerals, and enzymes, and provide the body with the greatest amount of nutrition. It is also necessary to eat animal foods (eggs, poultry, and meats) that are organic, free range, grass fed, and free of hormones and antibiotics.   Fresh fish with low mercury contamination is also a great option.  NOTE:  Carefully investigate the source of eggs labeled "free range" the government doesn't regulate the use of the phrase "free range" or "cage free" on eggs. 

At times, however, whole foods might not be an option.  While shopping under these circumstances, certainly, choose organically produced foods verses commercially produced options.  Organic foods are not contaminated with pesticides and typically have a higher nutritional content. Plus, they aren't irradiated or genetically engineered.  As such, knowing how to recognize an organic product becomes imperative.   

According to the USDA, food labeled 100 percent organic must contain 100 percent organically produced ingredients (not including salt and water).  Products labeled organic only require that 95% percent of the ingredients be organically produced.  When a product reads made with organic ingredients, only 70% of it contains organic ingredients.  Companies can use the label made with some organic ingredients, simply because the word organic appears in the ingredient list.

BEWARE OF FOODS LABELED "NATURAL" -- Natural does NOT mean organic. Food producers and manufacturers can label anything natural.  ANYTHING!

ALSO, BEWARE of "healthy" processed products containing fruit.  Most often theses products only contain "fruit-like" ingredients.  (Fruit juice concentrate, considered sugar, is a perfect example.)
